What’s the flavour of the month?

The hunt is on. Dialing in new phenos is a time sensitive thing in todays market. As soon as we plant, the game clock starts. We can’t afford to trip up when you have the bottom line and your reputation on the line.

Here are a few priorities we’ve discovered over the last 20 years in helping growers under the Canadian ACMPR/MMAR program:

1) Strain phenotype selection and maintaining its genetics: Cleanliness is next to Godliness. Selecting the right phenotype for your system and style is critical. Growers are part scientist and part artist!

2) Manage environments using Vapour Pressure Deficit (VPD). Invest in quality environmental controls: Hydronic air conditioning, reverse osmosis water filtration, fresh air exchange filtration & disinfection, and budget for enough dehumidification when using LED lighting and Hydronic air conditioning. Pennies in, pennies out.

3) Understanding growing media biogeochemistry and knowing the properties of what you’re using is critical. Know your Cation exchange capacity (CEC), water holding capacity, biological diversity, and buffer capacity, paired with evapotranspiration (ET) rates. 

4) Use only one fertilizer line, even if it’s not ours! Preferably choose a complete and balanced, biologically chelated & complexed fertilizer program that allows you to adapt to changing nutrient requirements. Often manufacturers don’t declare all that goes into their products. Mixing lines can lead to costly imbalances and underperformance.

5) Stop believing in snake oil and silver bullets! Plant nutrition is a question of efficiency in energy transformation, not magic! Science is only concerned with repeatability.
